A whopping 90,402 passengers have purchased the Namma Metro's smart cards — introduced to help passengers avail discounts and avoid the hassle of purchasing tokens daily. But less then 10 per cent of them use the card daily.
In Reach 1 — Byappanahalli and M G Road — 69,496 have smart cards, but only 5,300 people use them. In the newly introduced Reach3 and 3A (Peenya and Sampige Road) 16,294 people have the cards, but only 2,000 use them. A BMRCL official said, "On Reach 1, 31 per cent of passengers use smart cards, while hardly 12 per cent use them on Reach 3 and 3A."
The official added that 2,199 people had bought the card online and 2,413 cards were purchased by schools and college students. One of the demerits of the smart card is that it cannot be used to travel in city buses.
